Joe Mixon Early Life & Education
The National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals’ Joseph Tyler Mixon is a running back for the United States (NFL). The Bengals selected him in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft to play college football at Oklahoma, where he was named first-team All-Big 12. As a part of the group that made it to Super Bowl LVI in 2021, Mixon was given Pro Bowl honors.
Mixon played basketball and football for the Falcons at Freedom High School. He started three seasons as a running back for the football squad at Freedom High School. As a sophomore, he had 171 carries for 1,134 yards and 13 touchdowns. He carried the ball 201 times for 1,443 yards and 21 touchdowns in his junior season. He carried the ball 226 times for 1,704 yards and 23 touchdowns in his final season.
Mixon participated in 16 basketball games for the Falcons. He averaged 12.2 points per game, shot 57% of his free throws, and made 79 field goals. That season, his club finished 10-0 in league play and 22-2 overall.
The Rivals.com recruiting network rated Mixon as a five-star recruit and the top running back in the country. He made his college football commitment to the University of Oklahoma in January 2014. Even though he had 47 offers, he chose to go to Oklahoma instead of Alabama, California, Wisconsin, or UCLA.
Joe Mixon College life
From 2014 to 2016, Mixon attended and played college football for the University of Oklahoma. After being charged with a minor assault in October 2014, he was barred from playing for the Oklahoma football team 2014.
Mixon played in all 12 games with three starts during his redshirt freshman season in 2015 to gain playing time. The longest reception ever by a Sooner freshman running back, Mixon had a 76-yard touchdown reception in the first game of his career. He also had five carries for 27 yards against Akron. He amassed 154 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on October 24 against Texas Tech. He rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns against Oklahoma State in the yearly rivalry game. Oklahoma earned a spot in the 2015 College Football Playoff. He was given just four rushing yards and 11 receiving yards in the Orange Bowl semifinal loss to Clemson. He carried the ball 110 times for 749 yards in the regular season of 2015, averaging 6.8 yards per carrying. His career-long carry was 66 yards, and he scored seven touchdowns on the ground. He also had four touchdowns and 25 receptions for 345 yards, averaging 13.8 yards per catch.
NFL Career
The Cincinnati Bengals selected Mixon in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
In a 20-0 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Mixon made his NFL debut on September 10, 2017. He gained nine yards on eight carries and 15 yards on three receptions. Mixon began the 2018 season with 95 rushing yards, a rushing score, and five receptions for 54 yards in a 34-23 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the season opener. Mixon hurt his knee in the next game, which was against the Baltimore Ravens. He had to leave the game many times because of the injury.
In Week 3’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, in 2019, Mixon had a total of 61 yards on 15 carries and two receptions for 34 yards and a score in the Bengals’ 21-17 defeat.
Mixon’s contract with the Bengals was extended for four more years and $48 million on September 1, 2020, through the 2024 season. In the 33-25 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4, Mixon had 25 carries for 151 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, six receptions for 30 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown.
In the Bengals’ 27-24 overtime victory in Week 1 over the Minnesota Vikings, Mixon racked up 127 running yards and a touchdown. He rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 11 of 2021.
Mixon had 145 yards from scrimmage in the Bengals’ overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first game of the season in 2022.
