Jonas Valanciunas Career
Valanciunas started playing basketball during his school days. He is one of the top players in his school’s history and also created several records in the Utena district. The first professional team Valanciunas joined is the Perlas Vilnius, a Lithuania National Basketball League team. He played for 2-years with the Perlas and for the 2010-12 season, he was acquired by the Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius. Valanciunas was a part of the Lietuvos’s Lithuanian Basketball Federation LKF Cup winning team.
Valanciunas decided to enter the 2012 NBA draft and was considered one of the top picks before the draft. As expected, Valanciunas was drafted by the Toronto Raptors as the fifth overall pick on 23 June 2011. After signing his rookie scale contract, he made his NBA debut against the Indiana Pacers and scored 12 points with 10 rebounds in that game. In the next season, Valanciunas was named the MVP of the Las Vegas Summer League and became the first non-American to win this by averaging 19 points with 10 rebounds in four games. He continued to play till the 2019 season with the Raptors.
After his long run with the Raptors, he was traded to the Grizzlies in exchange for a 2024 second-round draft pick. In a match against the Houston Rockets, Valanciunas scored a massive 33 points with 15 rebounds and set his career-high score. In the two seasons with the Grizzlies, Valanciunas was in his prime. As of now, he is playing for the Pelicans for the 2021 season and everything is going well for him with the Pelicans.
