Jose Calderon was born in Spain and got his love for basketball from his father, who played for Doncel La Serena. After winning a junior team championship, he got a full-time offer to play basketball professionally. He represented Diputación Foral Alava and then moved on to the Spanish second division in 1999. He helped them progress to the top flight before moving onto ACB team Fuenlabrada and then to TAU Vitoria. He averaged d 11.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals in the Euro League before declaring for the NBA draft in 2005.

Calderon went undrafted but he got an opportunity to join the Toronto Raptors, finishing third among the rookies in assists made. He featured in 66 games in his first year, struggling most with his shooting. But his abilities as an intelligent playmaker started to come to light. He spent the next 8 years with the Raptors, scoring a career-high 30 points in a 94-92 loss against the LA Lakers in 2012. He led the league in assists per turnover for the third time in five years.

Calderon went to Detroit in 2013 and finished the campaign averaging 11.3 points and 7.1 assists per game and 46.1% in three-point shooting. The Dallas Mavericks awarded him with a four-year $28 million contract in 2013 and was traded to New York a year later. The Knicks, the Hawks and the Cavaliers signed him on short deals after with Calderon appeared in the 2018 NBA Finals with Cleveland. He played his final season with the Pistons and then retired to join the National Basketball Player’s Association as a special assistant to the executive director in 2019. He won a FIBA World Cup title in 2006, two Olympic silver medals in 2008 and 2012, as well as a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
