Jose Canseco Contract Details
Jose Canseco was once the highest-paid athlete in Major League Baseball. In 1990, he became the first $5 million man in baseball, penning down a $23.5 million contract with the Oakland Athletics. His salary started to bump up year-on-year as it ran from 1991 to 1995. In his first year, he received $2.8 million, $3.6 million in the next, $4.1 million in ’93, $4.4 million in ’94 and $5.1 million in ’95.
He also took home $3.5 million as a signing bonus. The Cuban-American crossed Don Mattingly’s record deal with the New York Yankees which was worth $19.6 million. Canseco took over a month to negotiate such a lucrative deal for himself, spending 15 days on the disabled list with a back problem.
Jose Canseco Career Earnings
Jose Canseco amassed over $45 million in earnings from his career in baseball alone. That is enough to make him one of the wealthiest men in America. But unfortunately, the former outfielder was made to file for bankruptcy in 2012. He was once MLB’s golden figure with the highest contract on the books but it all burnt out pretty quick.
Canseco revealed that most of his money was taken up by the government in taxes and the rest went towards handling his divorces. The MLB star lost $6 million to his ex-wife Esther Hadad and two supercars worth six figures each. He famously said, “Women are expensive.”
Canseco even went on record blaming the government completely for his financial distress. He tried to maintain a high-cost lifestyle while also showering his wives with gifts. He admitted to not paying taxes and falling down the quicksand of a lavish life – he forgot to save. This is, of course, a similar story for most athletes from that era. They all earned millions but were never guided on how to manage their money. Canseco is said to have an estimated net worth of $500,000 now.
Jose Canseco Baseball Career
Jose Canseco grew up playing baseball in Florida but didn’t even make it into his high school’s varsity team until his senior year. He was a late bloomer but soon got on the radar of major teams, earning a draft selection to the Oakland A’s in 1982.
Canseco made his mark in the minor leagues before getting a shot at the majors in ’85. He recorded a batting average of .302 and hit five home runs in his initial days as a rookie. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award after hitting 33 home runs.
Canseco kept improving. He became the first player in MLB history to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in 1998. Injuries played a major role in Canseco’s downfall. He was one of the best players during his time but he could have reached higher peaks with a better fitness regimen. He is celebrated for his glory days in Oakland.
Here are his career highlights –
- 6× All-Star (1986, 1988–1990, 1992, 1999)
