Nate Diaz says he is training to fight Dustin Poirier next
UFC lightweight fighter Nate Diaz is one of the feistiest fighters inside and outside the octagon. The 35-year-old claimed on Twitter this week that he wanted to take on Dustin Poirier.
“I’m training to whoop ur a** next. Be about it don’t talk about it.”
This comes after the Diamond beat Conor McGregor at UFC 257 in an epic lightweight bout last weekend. Diaz regularly talks himself up and tries to beef with top UFC fighters.
And he is also regularly called out for it too. Justin Gaethje pointed out the irony in Diaz’s tweet and wrote that it was Diaz who is the one that is just about the talk.
“From the dude that only talks about it.”
Diaz is obviously aiming for something impossible here. He hasn’t fought since November 2019, and Poirier should be in line for a title fight next instead of a scrap with someone like Diaz.
Poirier is tipped to take on Michael Chandler or Charles Oliveira in case Khabib Nurmagomedov does not return to the promotion. As for Nate, he may have to earn his fight against Poirier by taking on someone else first.
He was scheduled to fight Poirier in the past, though, but that never materialized. The two were scheduled to fight in the co-main event at UFC 230 in 2018.
However, the Diamond pulled out of the fight and it never materialized. The two have had severely different growth trajectories since then.
Nevertheless, if the fight was to ever happen, it would by no means be a boring watch. But honestly speaking, it is one that Poirier would, or at least should, not take up at this stage.
