Justin Simmons played both safety and cornerback for Boston College. He earned a full scholarship and majored in communications. He featured in 12 Eagles games as a freshman and started all 12 as a senior. The cornerback earned All-American Fourth Team honours and was mentioned in the ProFootballFocus.com All-America team.
Simmons was outstanding in the NFL combine, recording the best time in the 20-yard shuttle since 2006. He was ranked the sixth-best safety in his draft class and was selected 98th overall by the Denver Broncos. Head coach Gary Kubiak named Simmons as backup safety behind Darian Stewart.
Simmons made his professional debut against the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately, a wrist injury against the Cincinnati Bengals pulled him out of action post week 3. He finished his rookie campaign with with 30 combined tackles (25 solo), four pass deflections, two interceptions, and one sack in 13 games and three starts. After Vance Joseph took over from Kubiak, Simmons was able to work his way to a starting spot.
