At the age of twelve in 1998, Taylor started boxing. At St Fergal’s Boxing Club, her father trained her and her two elder brothers, Lee and Peter. At the 2005 European Amateur Championships in Tonsberg, Norway, Taylor achieved his first notable victory. In the 60 kg lightweight class final, she defeated Eva Wahlström of Finland to win the gold medal.
Taylor defeated reigning world champion Tatiana Chalaya of Russia to win her second consecutive gold medal at the 2006 European Amateur Championships in Warsaw, Poland.
