Bates-Diop started playing basketball in his high school, Sacramento. At the end of his junior year at high school, he averaged 18.4 points with 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. Out of the 9 games he played in his junior year, he averaged 9.7 points with 5.2 rebounds per game. In a match against the mighty Michigan State, Bates-Diop scored a massive 32 points and set his career-high record.
