PFL could be buying Bellator and that could lead to something interesting if Ariel Helwani has his way
The talk of PFL buying Bellator seems to have cooled down a bit since the initial discussions, but Ariel Helwani brought up this topic again.
The MMA journalist shared his plan should the deal take place, and it was an interesting one. Helwani wanted to set up a PFL x Bellator kind of clash with four stars from each promotion in a division.
The reporter wanted several divisions to accommodate the fighters and have each promotion’s CEOs promoting their fighters.
Helwani also claimed that fighters who couldn’t fit into this would be able to fight in other playoffs or championship rounds.
While the idea was interesting, Helwani did claim that this could take place only for one year. However, not everyone was on board with the plans.
Adult star and MMA fan Kendra Lust was quick to share her issues with this. Lust hoped that this wouldn’t take place and blamed the production values of PFL for it not being a great product.
She also didn’t like some of the commentary the promotion had and added that it wasn’t exciting.
The UFC is hands down the biggest MMA promotion in the world, but there have been some incredible bouts on Bellator and PFL.
While the two lag behind the UFC by quite an amount, the pair joining up could be great for their future and the future of MMA.
Scott Coker, the CEO of Bellator, was asked about the company being bought out by PFL a month back.
Coker confirmed that they were looking for partners and would take up to 90 days to find a solution.
When asked if PFL could be buying Bellator, Coker confirmed that they were in the running but didn’t confirm a sale had taken place (h/t Bloody Elbow):
“(PFL) is definitely in the conversation. There’s a couple conversations going on right now with Viacom and other companies. PFL is definitely one of them.”
He also couldn’t confirm if the two promotions would be combined into one or if they ran separately.
PFL buying Bellator does make sense, but it will be interesting to see what happens.
