In Lithonia, Georgia, he attended Martin Luther King Jr. High School. He played football and track in high school.

From 2012 to 2015, Byard was a member of the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State University. In 2011, he was redshirted. With the first pick in the third round (64th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft, Byard was selected by the Tennessee Titans. Byard was selected by the Titans in the second round, 60th overall, in the 2003 NFL Draft, making him the 24th player ever drafted from Middle Tennessee State and the highest player selected from that school since Tyrone Calico. After the Titans decided not to re-sign Rashad Johnson, Byard entered training camp as the team’s primary free safety. He was appointed the starting free safety for the 2017 campaign, as was to be expected.

In the Titans’ 26-16 loss to the Oakland Raiders in the season opener, Byard started and made eight solo tackles. He made a season-high nine combined tackles on October 1, 2017, as the Titans fell to the Houston Texans 57-14. He also made his first career interception off Deshaun Watson. On October 22, 2017, during the Titans’ 12-9 overtime victory over the Cleveland Browns, Byard had four total tackles, three pass deflections, two interceptions off of Kizer and one off of Cody Kessler. He won AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his three interceptions.

In a 20-17 victory over the Houston Texans in Week 2, Byard threw a touchdown pass to rookie Dane Cruikshank on a fake punt. Byard recorded his first interception of the year by intercepting Joe Flacco in a 21-0 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6.
