Khabib Nurmagomedov mocked UFC commentator Joe Rogan for butchering his cousin’s surname, even though the acclaimed podcaster has been calling Khabib’s fight ever since he made his debut
As a pre-eminent figure of the UFC broadcast team, Joe Rogan has had his fair share of trouble pronouncing fighter names- especially ones coming from Russia. Khabib Nurmagomedov did his talking inside the octagon, and built up a resume through some dominant work- so much that it’s almost impossible for anyone to falter while speaking his name.
The latest entrant from the Eagles MMA clan is Khabib’s cousin Umar Nurmagomedov, who has won his initial two bouts in the UFC. Umar carries the same surname that Khabib does, which in itself is of substantial value, and significant responsibility.
Umar had an impressive showing at UFC 272 when he submitted UFC veteran Brian Keller inside the first round. He took the center stage alongside Joe Rogan to speak about his performance and plans for the future. While signing off, Joe Rogan hilariously mispronounced his name, rather butchered it completely. The viral goof-up was a source to some rib-tickling memes the other day.
Khabib posted a video of the incident on his Instagram channel and reminded Joe Rogan that Umar is here to stay, and the podcaster should not have misspelt his name. He captioned the post,
‘ @joerogan you should have remembered this name 😄
@umar_nurmagomedov is a problem 👊’
During a recent episode of the ‘Believe You Me’ podcast, Michael Bisping gushed about the potential he sees in Umar Nurmagomedov, and even hailed him as ‘The new Khabib’.
Umar Nurmagomedov, Khabib’s cousin, comes from the same breed of fighters trained by the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. He had an impressive performance against Brian Keller at UFC 272, and surprised everyone with his presence of mind and placidness.
Contrary to Khabib, Umar actually has a strong well-rounded game, with some ridiculously creative kicks. Speaking about the young prospect Bisping said, “Umar Nurmagomedov, I mean, it is the new [Khabib Nurmagomedov]. I mean, how impressive was he… Whatever weight division he is in, he’s gonna be a contender 100%.”
