Birch attended St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School in Russell, Ontario, before transferring to The Winchendon School in Winchendon, Massachusetts, and Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where he finished his high school career.
From 2011 to 2012, Birch was a member of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. In 2012, he changed schools and joined the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. He placed third in the Mountain West Conference as a junior in 2013–14 with 10.2 rebounds per game and second with 3.8 blocks per game, respectively. He played 25.4 minutes per game in 69 games, averaging 8.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 0.8 assists.
In April 2014, he left his last year of college eligibility and entered the NBA draft.
Birch, who went undrafted in the 2014 NBA Draft, signed with the Washington Wizards for the NBA Summer League. On September 14, 2014, he signed with the Miami Heat, his first NBA team. The Heat subsequently released him on October 25, 2014. On November 3, 2014, the Sioux Falls Skyforce gained him as an affiliate player.
