Lando Norris is only in his second F1 season and he still doesn’t command a huge salary.
The 20-year-old impressed in his first season for McLaren. However, he had some tough luck in some races. Carlos Sainz ended the season in sixth place while Norris was down in 11th.
However, the pair seemed ready for the 2020 F1 season and were sharing their views on the MCL35.
Norris even joked that he designed the car completely, but the 20-year-old also highlighted how he wanted to stay close to the McLaren factory and work with the team.
The British driver added that he wasn’t making as much as a Lewis Hamilton and couldn’t think of moving to Monaco (h/t Daily Mail):
“I have just got a new home down the road from the factory – 3 minutes 20 seconds in my car, driving within the speed limits.
“Before that I was in Guildford, but this is even easier. And I enjoy being near the factory and close to my friends rather than be stuck in Monaco.
“I can go to London and have a nicer life that way. Compared to a lot of the other drivers, I am not earning the amounts that would make it more beneficial to live in Monaco than the enjoyment loss of going into London with my friends.”
Norris added that he didn’t rule out moving to Monaco in the future but that depended on his salary.
The youngster is extremely young in his F1 career and isn’t earning the millions that some of the top stars do.
Hamilton is one of the top paid stars but is out of a contract at the end of this season.
However, the Daily Mail claims that a new deal with Mercedes could be in the works and the Brit could era a staggering £60million-per-season.
Norris, for his part, makes just £400,000 which is still a decent sum. That amount may not be enough to justify staying in Monaco, something that Hamilton has done.
Norris is a breath of fresh air in the F1 paddock, and it will be interesting to see if his new home improves his on-track performance.
The first race of the 2020 season is in a month and all the teams seem ready for the campaign.
