According to Leeds Live, highly-rated Polish starlet Mateusz Bogusz has signed a new contract with Leeds United that should keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2023. The 18-year-old joined the Whites from Polish lower-division club Ruch Chorzow back in January 2019, initially signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the West Yorkshire giants.
Born in Ruda Slaska, Poland, Mateusz Bogusz rose through the youth ranks of Ruch Chorzow before making his first-team debut aged just 16.
The teenage attacking midfielder scored 5 goals in 33 appearances for his boyhood club across all competitions, featuring in the second and third divisions in the homeland, before earning a move to Leeds United in January 2019.
Bogusz quickly established himself as a regular fixture in the Whites’ U-23 side. He was a part of the squad that became PDL Northern League 2018-19 champions, before going on to beat Birmingham City to win the Professional Development League.
The 18-year-old made several matchday squad appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s senior side that made it through to the semi-final of the 2018-19 EFL Championship Playoffs. Bogusz eventually made his first-team bow in an EFL Cup fixture against Stoke City last August.
The Poland U-21 international was handed his league debut in the Whites’ final game of the 2019-20 season that ended in a 4-0 victory against Charlton Athletic.
Leeds United’s promotion-winning campaign in the Championship last season is a testament to the massive progress made by the club under Bielsa and director of football Victor Orta in recent years.
Besides assembling a formidable senior squad that absolutely nailed it in England’s second-tier this past season, the Whites have also put a lot of emphasis on their youth recruitment drive. Leeds have made it a habit to scour the continent for bright emerging prospects with a view to building a strong platform for continued success in the years to come.
Youngsters like Leif Davis, Robbie Gotts, Oliver Casey, Pascal Struijk, and Jamie Shackleton have already put pen to paper on new deals at Elland Road and it’s easy to see why a fresh contract for Mateusz Bogusz is yet another massive boost to the Whites’ long-term plans moving forward.
The 18-year-old has already caught the eye with his versatility, slotting seamlessly into attacking and deep-lying roles in the middle of the park. That he has already begun to make a name for himself in the senior level at such a tender age speaks volumes of his talent and potential.
The sleeping giants from West Yorkshire have finally woken up from their slumber after securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.
Bielsa needs to bring in some immediate game-changers to guide the club to safety in the top-flight but Leeds’ long-term future in the top-flight will ultimately depend on their ability to promote young talent.
Highly-rated youngsters like Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Allen have joined the ranks from Wigan Atheltic and Linfield respectively in the ongoing transfer window – a further indication that Leeds are going to continue scouring the continent for up and coming prospects.
Mateusz Bogusz seems more than capable of playing at the highest level within the next two or three years. Having said that, a new deal for the Polish sensation could well prove to be a shrewd piece of business for the club.
