According to Football Insider (h/t Leeds Live), former England striker Kevin Phillips suggested that Leeds should sign Divock Origi in case he is available in January. The Liverpool man was tipped to make a switch in the summer and a move to Leeds was also doing the rounds but nothing materialised.
It took Leeds 16 years to get back to English football’s top-flight but finally, they have done it. Giants of the country once, it has been a long road back to the Premier League for them. In a successful promotion campaign, they had a lot of players who played their part and ensured Premier League football would return to Elland Road.
One of them was Patrick Bamford. The former Chelsea man single-handedly took on the goalscoring responsibilities and scored an impressive 16 goals in 45 games last season. This season, he has continued his good form and has managed 7 goals and 2 assists in 10 games. Now the problem is that Leeds don’t have any sort of cover for the striker.
Rodrigo Moreno was bought in the summer but he has mostly been used as a number 10. Apart from him, there is no senior player who can slot into the forward role. This is where an experienced option like Origi does the trick. A veteran of 145 appearances for Liverpool, the £45k-a-week Belgian has won the Champions League and Premier League.
While Origi isn’t exactly a world-class option to go for, he does represent a decent forward option to have up your sleeve. Capable of providing the occasional cameo from the bench or starting in the occasional game, Origi can be one for Leeds to pursue in January.
