Leeds United Opinion: Helder Costa might fire the Whites to promotion next term
According to Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United have lined up a sensational swoop for Wolves winger Helder Costa this summer, with reports claiming that manager Marcelo Bielsa is keen to bring the Portuguese international to Elland Road on a season-long loan deal.
Yorkshire Evening Post understands that the Whites are likely to be priced out of a permanent deal for the 25-year-old, so they are looking to get him on their books as a loanee instead.
Costa is not the only player to be linked with a loan move to West Yorkshire this summer, though, with the Whites also weighing up a move for Brighton defender Ben White. (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post)
The 25-year-old initially arrived at Molineux on loan in the summer of 2016 before becoming a then club-record acquisition for the Black Country outfit in January 2017.
Wolves splashed a staggering £13 million back in their Championship days to sign the Portuguese winger permanently and he proved himself to be worth every penny, establishing himself as one of the key players for the club in the second-tier.
Costa’s stellar run of form in his first season at Molineux earned him Wolves’ Player of the Year award for the 2016-17 season. The 25-year-old subsequently played a key role in the 2017-18 season, as Wolves secured automatic promotion to the Premier League as the winners of the Championship.
However, the Portuguese international has found life a lot tougher in the Premier League. Although he made a total of 30 appearances for Wolves in all competitions this past season, including 25 in the Premier League, Costa’s returns weren’t even half as good as they were back in the Championship.
He managed only 2 goals and 2 assists over the course of the entire 2018-19 campaign and fell out of favour towards the end, with manager Nuno Santo implementing a change in formation.
Looking at things from Wolves’ point of view, it won’t be a bad idea for them to allow Costa to go out on loan for a season in the Championship. A loan spell at a promotion-chasing club could do a world of good to his confidence as a player, and they might as well make a profit by selling him permanently should Leeds manage to secure promotion to the Premier League next term.
It has been quite apparent that Costa is not capable of making a massive impact in the Premier League, despite his drive, determination and hardworking nature, and Wolves need to look for upgrades in the market given that they are set to compete in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League in a couple of month’s time.
To put things into perspective, Leeds United’s links with Helder Costa should get the crowd at Elland Road on their feet, given that the Portuguese international had proven himself to be a reliable source of goals and assists in the Championship earlier in his career at Wolves.
The Whites have plenty of issues to sort out this summer after narrowly missing out on promotion and the arrival of the 25-year-old could hand them a massive boost ahead of the upcoming season, as the sleeping Yorkshire giants look to reignite their surge for promotion and start right from the scratch all over again.
Leeds need to find replacements for the likes of Jack Harrison and Izzy Brown, with both the loanees returning to their parent clubs Man City and Chelsea respectively, whilst question marks continue to linger over the future of Samu Saiz at Elland Road following his miserable loan spell at Getafe in the La Liga.
Costa, who is an out-and-out winger, is predominantly a left-footed player but he is capable of playing out wide on either flank. And we all know how dangerous a player he can be in the Championship with his pace, acceleration, work-rate, drive and tenacity.
Moreover, Marcelo Bielsa likes his wingers to run with directness at the full-backs and Costa’s style of play certainly suits the Argentinian’s philosophy.

Keeping that in mind, Leeds should go all out in their pursuit of the 1-cap Portuguese international this summer as the 25-year-old could add a lot of energy and firepower to their attack in the Championship next season.
