Leeds United Opinion: Why Matej Vydra will be a brilliant fit at Elland Road?

Back in July 2018, a report from the Sun claimed Leeds United were interested in signing Matej Vydra, who was then a part of Derby County. But a deal never materialised and instead, the Czech Republic forward joined Burnley in the summer transfer window.

Matej Vydra, 26, was the top scorer in the Championship last season, scoring 21 goals in 40 league appearances as Derby finished sixth in the table. But he endured a torrid time at Burnley so far, managing just one goal in 11 league appearances so far this season. In fact, the 26-year-old has started just five games, with just two starts coming in the Premier League.

Even if Vydra has failed to live up to the expectations at the Turf Moor, Leeds United should reignite their interest and sign him this summer.

Leeds United would need another forward within their attacking ranks, especially if they achieve promotion to the Premier League. They have automatic promotion in their sights, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men just a point above third-placed Sheffield United.

Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford are two strikers Bielsa has at his disposal. Roofe has done very well but injuries have limited him to just 28 games, in which he has hit 14 goals. Bamford has been the Whites’ main man in the attack of late and while he scored a hat-trick at Preston, the 25-year-old has been guilty of squandering a lot of chances in open goal as well.

If Leeds are to do well in the Premier League next season, they’ll need new additions to their squad. And Vydra will fit the bill perfectly at Elland Road, providing a big boost to the team’s attacking department. The Czech Republic international was in stunning form last season and gave a testament of his qualities, displaying what he can do if given regular opportunities.

Not only can Vydra play as a centre-forward, but also his ability to play off the no.9 and on the left will give Bielsa a lot of versatility up front. The former Watford man possesses good pace, dribbling skills and movement and will bring a certain level of directness to the Whites’ play.

Furthermore, he has a peach of a left-foot that is capable of delivering absolute bangers from long distance.

Verdict

Leeds do need another striker and signing someone like Vydra would be a step in the right direction. Given the Czech forward’s situation at Burnley, it won’t be much difficult for Bielsa to lure him away to Elland Road, provided the Peacocks achieve promotion.
