Leeds United Opinion: Signing Nick Powell from Wigan will be a smart move

Nick Powell is a 24-year-old English forward who currently plies his trade in the EFL Championship where he plays for Wigan Athletic. He is usually deployed in the number ten role operating freely near the edge of the box but is more than capable of playing as the central striker.

Born in Crewe, the England youth international began his career with local club Crewe Alexandra before he was eventually scouted as a bright talent at a very young age and signed up by Manchester United in the summer of 2012.

Although he was at United for almost the entirety of 4 years, his progress at Old Trafford was deterred heavily as he spent multiple loan stints at smaller clubs in order to gain experience. But his United career never really took off and although he did feature 9 times for the Devils over the years, he only ever managed one goal.

Since joining Wigan Athletic on a free transfer in 2016 though, it can be said that his career has taken off, albeit not quite in the fashion he would’ve hoped for having spent a long time in the books at one of the biggest football teams in the world.

He has made 131 appearances in total for Wigan and has produced a decent return of 38 goals and 17 assists. This season, he has scored 5 times and assisted 6 from his 23 league appearances while he has only been in the starting XI in less than half of all their matches.

Considering that he was developed at Manchester United, his potential is obvious huge and this added to the fact that his versatility allows him to play anywhere across the front-line is an added bonus to whichever team he plays for.

He has an excellent ability to time his runs well while he also possesses some excellent shooting skills from outside the box. Giving him space near the edge of the area is always a massive mistake and he is more than capable of beating a man as well.

According to reports from Daily Star, Leeds United are eyeing up a move for Powell as a possible replacement for Getafe ace Samuel Saiz who is currently on loan at the La Liga club but is expected to make his deal permanent in the summer.

Powell is on the last leg of his first-team contract with Wigan which is set to expire at the end of the season and with promotion still being an ambition at Elland Road, the Englishman could be tempted to make the move up to the Premier League.

Jack Harrison is set to return to parent club Manchester City at the end of the term while Pablo Hernandez is 33 now. With Saiz’s return seeming quite unlikely too, this move makes complete sense for Leeds United and the famous all-white kit could be the perfect motivation for Powell to kickstart his career again.
