Why Leeds United signing Danny Rose would be a smart move

According to Football Insider (h/t Leeds Live), former Sunderland forward Kevin Phillips has urged Leeds United to sign Danny Rose. He was of the opinion that they need a natural and better quality left-back than Stuart Dallas and Ezgjan Aloiski to cut it in the Premier League. Rose has been frozen out at Tottenham this season and his contract is set to expire after this season.

Born in Doncaster, Danny Rose started his career at Leeds United before moving to Tottenham in 2007. He went through loan spells at Watford, Peterborough United, Bristol City and Sunderland before establishing himself as a first-team regular in North London.

The 30-year-old came to be known as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League during his prime years, while also nailing down a regular spot in the national team. Rose retained his status as a regular starter for Tottenham until the arrival of Jose Mourinho towards the end of last year.

Having made only 12 league appearances during the first half of the previous campaign, Rose was shipped out on loan to Newcastle, where he made 9 appearances in all competitions.

The veteran left-back boasts of an impressive tally of 10 goals and 29 assists in 214 appearances (source – Transfermarkt) for Tottenham in all competitions. But his time at the club could well be drawing to a close, with Mourinho apparently unwilling to rely on his ageing legs. A full international for England, Rose has featured 29 times for the national side.

Leeds need a natural left-back like Rose

Leeds are coming to terms with the harsh realities of the Premier League as they have already lost 6 of their opening 12 games. Yet, there remains that sense of optimism in watching them as Bielsa goes through his first season in the English top-flight.

When Kevin Phillips said that the likes of Dallas and Alioski are makeshift left-backs and that only works in the Championship. In the Premier League, they need a specialist or more so, a specialist with experience.

Danny Rose comes with bags of experience in the Premier League and was one of the best attacking full-backs during his prime. At just 30, Rose still has a lot to offer. A return to Leeds, where he spent his youth career, could be just what he needs at this point.

Leeds could use a player of Rose’s experience. He will surely be a good addition to the side if a January deal can be agreed to. They could also wait until his contract expires in the summer but they really need to shore up the backline soon.
