According to TeamTalk (h/t Hartlepool Mail), Leicester City have shown interest in Marcus Tavernier but has been brushed off by Middlesbrough. Tavernier has been in good form this season and that has led to speculation about his future.
His contract runs until 2023. Premier League sides like Leeds United and Everton have all shown interest in him but Boro have been reluctant to let go.
Leicester are having another good campaign under Brendan Rodgers and while they made some good additions like Wesley Fofana, Cengiz Under and Timothy Castagne, it still seems like they are a bit short staffed in attacking midfield. James Maddison is their only natural No.10 to call upon.
The likes of Youri Tielemans and Dennis Praet are central midfielders, while there are also the likes of Nampalys Mendy, Hamza Choudhury, Daniel Amartey and Wilfred Ndidi, who play as defensive midfielders. That leaves Maddison as the only creative midfielder in the side for Rodgers to rely on. In turn, it becomes a priority for the side to sign a similar player.
To put things into perspective, the Foxes should focus their interest in Marcus Tavernier and it would make sense for a number of reasons. The 21-year-old has long been regarded as one of the most exciting up and coming talents in the Championship and has shown significant improvement over the past year or so.
One of Tavernier’s key assets is his versatility to play in multiple roles in the midfield and across the forward line. The Middlesbrough graduate started off as an out-and-out winger but has often been utilised in a No.10 role, in central midfield, and also as a wing-back in his career.
Still only 21, Marcus Tavernier is certainly not the finished article just yet but he seems to have the talent and potential to cut his teeth in the Premier League moving forward. Leicester need a player like Tavernier who can not only add more to the creative midfield but also to various other positions, given his versatility.
