Why Leicester City should go all out to sign Steven Bergwijn this month

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, while speaking on Sky Sports News (h/t Leicester Mercury), has claimed that Leicester City are interested in signing PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn.

Steven Bergwijn, 22, enjoyed an excellent last season with PSV Eindhoven, netting 15 goals and providing 13 assists in 41 appearances. He has been fantastic this term as well, contributing with six goals and 13 assists in all competitions this term, making 28 appearances for Ernest Faber’s side.

The Dutchman’s dazzling displays in PSV colours have caught the attention of Leicester City, who want to sign a winger this month, the report (h/t Leicester Mercury) adds.

The Foxes have performed extremely well this season as they sit comfortably in the third position, three points behind second-placed Manchester City. They have scored 52 goals, which is the third-highest in the division so far. The majority of the credit goes to striker Jamie Vardy, whose exploits in front of the goal this season has been fantastic.

Vardy is currently the league’s top-scorer with 17 goals in 22 appearances, signifying his worth within the high-flying Foxes unit. The Englishman has been ably supported by attacking players such as James Maddison, Ayoze Perez, Harvey Barnes, Dennis Praet, Marc Albrighton and Demarai Gray. While Leicester boast of such exciting attacking talents, Barnes, Albrighton and Gray are the only natural wide players at Rodgers’ disposal.

Barnes, Albrighton and Gray have contributed to just four goals and eight assists in the league. Those numbers are inferior to what Steven Bergwijn has accumulated in the Eredivisie — five goals and 10 assists. Bergwijn, who has spent the entirety of his career at PSV, is versatile and can play up front as a No. 10 as well as on the wings.

Leicester would benefit as far as their top-four aspirations are concerned – provided the Dutch forward replicates his form at the King Power Stadium.

Verdict

Having witnessed young players like Maddison, Soyuncu, Chilwell and Barnes thriving under the guidance of Rodgers, it does make sense for the club to consider signing a promising winger like Bergwijn. All in all, Leicester must do everything possible to sign the Dutchman.
