Leicester City Opinion: Why Aaron Mooy would be a good buy for the Foxes?

According to a report from the Examiner, Leicester City are one of a host of Premier League clubs interested in signing Huddersfield Town star, Aaron Mooy.

Huddersfield were relegated during the recently concluded season and it’s not a surprise that teams from England’s top-flight want to snap up their midfield ace. Australian international Aaron Mooy, who was a key figure in the Terriers’ 2016/17 Championship promotion campaign, was the standout performer for Huddersfield last season.

The 28-year-old is contracted to the Terriers until next summer, with Town having the option to extend those terms by a further 12 months. However, the report claims Premier League clubs believe Mooy can be lured away for around £15m.

Keeping that in mind, Leicester City must do everything possible to win the race for the midfielder’s signature.

Brendan Rodgers has been a breath of fresh air for the Foxes, helping the club achieve a respectable eighth-placed finish last season. He’ll be keen to improve the squad over the summer in a bid to break into the top-six next term.

According to the Telegraph, Leicester are leading the race to sign Youri Tielemans from AS Monaco. The Belgian impressed at the King Power Stadium on a six-month loan spell in the second half of last season and the Foxes are considering a move to land the player on a permanent deal.

However, they face competition from Manchester United, Tottenham and AC Milan which makes it difficult for Rodgers and company to achieve the player’s signature. Leicester need strength in depth and if Tielemans is not signed, Rodgers must shift his attention towards Aaron Mooy.

In Wilfred Ndidi, Nampalys Mendy, Hamza Choudhury and James Maddison, Rodgers has an exciting midfield unit. Mooy would bring something different to that midfield, whilst adding strength in depth. A classy operator of the ball, the Australian is equally comfortable playing as a deep-lying playmaker or in the no.10 role.

The ex-Manchester City man uses his terrific passing and crossing range to initiate attacks from the middle of the park. Mooy can protect the ball, control games from midfield and break up opposition attacks as well. His energy to drive his team forward and spatial awareness are second to none, while he can also come up with long-range scorchers.

Without a shadow of doubt, the Australian would be the perfect player to partner the defensive-minded Ndidi in the Leicester engine room.

Verdict

Ndidi and Chowdhury were solid for the Foxes in the middle of the park this past season, but considering they’ll have ambitions of qualifying for Europe next term, Rodgers will need more legs across the squad. There is no doubt that Mooy has the qualities to play in the Premier League, and in Rodgers’ possession-based system, chances of him thriving will be high.
