Why Leicester City should hand Wes Morgan a new contract
Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that skipper Wes Morgan is in talks over a new contract with the club. (h/t the Leicester Mercury)
Wes Morgan, 36, joined Leicester City from hometown club Nottingham Forest back in 2012 and has made 309 appearances for the club. He is on course for 10th season with the Foxes as the centre-back, whose current contract expires in June, is set to remain at the King Power Stadium until he is 37 with a new deal being discussed.
The central defender has developed a reputation for being a model professional and despite his advancing years, he has been a valuable cover for first-choice centre-back pairing Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu for Leicester this season. He played 22 Premier League games the last term and in 2017/18 season racked up 32 appearances.
Morgan is a leader on and off the pitch – a senior figure held in high regards by his Leicester teammates. He was part of the unforgettable Leicester squad that lifted the Premier League title during the 2015/16 season under then-manager Claudio Ranieri. The former Jamaican international has played only eight times this season but he has given everything on the pitch whenever handed a chance.
Morgan is an asset to Leicester, both on and off the pitch. He is a true professional with experience of the highest order and even at the ripe age of 36, the defender is still going strong.
Verdict
For Rodgers, it would make perfect sense to renew Morgan’s contract. The veteran has proven to be a reliable back-up for Evans and Soyuncu, who have formed a strong understanding in the defence this term.
