According to Sky Sports, Leicester City will have to battle it out with a host of Bundesliga clubs led by Borussia Dortmund if they want to sign Rangers hitman Alfredo Morelos next summer.
The same report claims that Morelos is closing in on a transfer away from the Ibrox at the end of the season but Rangers would demand a fee of around £20 million to part ways with the prolific Colombian.
Morelos has been a revelation in Europe since his move to Rangers in the summer of 2017 following a successful stint at Finnish top flight club HJK Helsinki. The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the hottest properties in the Scottish Premiership, accumulating a whopping 46 goals and 19 assists from 84 appearances for the Gers across all competitions. After considerable success in his debut season in Scotland, the free-scoring Colombian has taken his game to a new level this term, scoring 28 goals in all competitions.
The 1-cap Colombian international also impressed in the Europa League this term, scoring twice in the group stages as Rangers finished third in their group.
A technically-gifted and tactically-versatile attacker, Morelos is primarily a centre-forward by trade but he is also capable of playing out wide on either flank. A fast, agile and hardworking striker known for his pace, power, drive and stamina, Morelos combines his pace with his physicality to run at the opposition. He is not the tallest of centre-forwards but he uses his athleticism and upper body strength to get off the ground quicker than his defensive counterparts, making him a genuine threat from set-pieces as well.
Regarded as an instinctive striker blessed with good poaching abilities, Morelos keeps lurking in and around the penalty area, waiting for any loose ball to come his way. An aggressive striker by nature, he is a good distance shooter who never hesitates to put his foot through the ball. Furthermore, Morelos works very hard without the ball as well, be it making runs behind the backline or pressing the opposition to win possession back for his team.
To put things into perspective, Morelos has shown all the attributes that would make him prolific goalscorer in the Premier League in the years to come and Leicester City might get the ideal long-term successor to the throne of Jamie Vardy should the Colombian thrive in England.
The Foxes have struggled to score goals consistently in the Premier League this term, with Vardy’s fluctuating form taking a toll on the team’s overall performances. Kelechi Iheanacho hasn’t found the net since October last year while Shinji Okazaki has only played a bit-part role, leaving Leicester short of firepower in the final third.
Leicester haven’t had much luck with their mega-money striking recruits in recent times, with the likes of Islam Slimani and Ahmed Musa failing to justify their huge price tags. Slimani has once again endured a poor season on loan at Fenerbahce and the Foxes should raise some funds by getting the Algerian off their books permanently.
However, someone like Alfredo Morelos has shown strong signs of excellence and Brendan Rodgers should not hesitate to splash the cash and strike a deal for the Colombian next summer in a bid to bolster his attacking options.
