Leicester City Opinion: McGregor and Tierney would add more depth and quality to the Foxes ranks

According to The Daily Express, Leicester City boss, Brendan Rodgers is plotting a sensational reunion with two of his former Celtic players, with reports claiming that the Foxes are ready to swoop for Hoops duo Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney.

The same source claims that Leicester are looking at Tierney as an alternative to first-choice left-back Ben Chilwell, who has attracted interest from Premier League champions Man City.

The Express also understands that attacking midfielder McGregor has been lined up as a replacement for James Maddison, with the England international believed to be on the radar of Man United this summer.

This is not the first time though, that Tierney has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with the highly-rated 22-year-old heavily tipped to make the move across the border since the start of the last season.

A three-time PFA Young Player of the Year in Scotland, the Hoops academy graduate has established himself as one of the brightest emerging prospects in Scottish football, and Leicester’s interest in him comes as little surprise.

Tierney’s involvement was somewhat restricted due to injuries this past season but he still made a total of 40 appearances in all competitions and was one of the key architects of Celtic’s treble-winning campaign, contributing with a goal and 6 assists.

Regarded as one of the best full-backs in Scotland, Tierney has established himself as an ever-present at the back for the Hoops ever since his breakthrough in the 2014-15 season, racking up an impressive 8 goals and 37 assists in 170 appearances for the club in all competitions till date.

As well as Tierney, McGregor was one of the key driving forces behind Celtic’s march to their third consecutive domestic treble this past season, contributing with an impressive 6 goals and 16 assists in 59 appearances from the midfield.

The 25-year-old also broke into the first-team picture at Parkhead just a season earlier than Tierney and he has gradually established himself as one of the most creative players in the division, winning 5 Scottish Premiership crowns and 3 Scottish Cup titles.

McGregor, who has been capped by Scotland on 12 occasions at the senior international level, boasts of an eye-watering record for the Hoops, having accumulated a total of 36 goals and 46 assists in 224 appearances across all competitions.

To put things into perspective, it is easy to see why Leicester City would strike gold if they really manage to complete this audacious double raid on Celtic. Both Tierney and McGregor are top-quality players, and given that the duo reached great heights at Parkhead under the stewardship of Rodgers, the fans at the King Power Stadium have every reason to believe they can make the step up to the Premier League.

While Leicester making a move for Kieran Tierney pretty much depends on the future of Ben Chilwell at the club, the same cannot be said about McGregor and Maddison. It is true that there is a greater possibility of the Foxes swooping for the 25-year-old Scotsman should Maddison depart, but Rodgers might also look at him as a useful squad player in the Premier League.

Unlike Maddison, who is a specialist No.10 by trade, McGregor is lot more versatile and has been used in multiple positions in the midfield and attacking third over the course of his time at Celtic.

Essentially a central midfielder by trade, the Scotsman has the attributes to fit seamlessly into an advanced No.10 and withdrawn No.8 roles in the middle of the park, whilst also possessing the crossing ability and the skill set to play out wide on either side of the pitch.

Irrespective of what the future holds for Maddison, a creative and versatile player like McGregor proclaims his value by his own qualities, and Rodgers should look at him as cover and competition for the likes of Wilfried Ndidi, Nampalys Mendy, Hamza Choudhury and Harvey Barnes.

Leicester already have a plethora of young and talented players in their ranks, and given that both McGregor and Tierney are about to enter their prime years, it would be an excellent idea the Foxes to get the duo on board this summer.
