Leicester City Opinion: Why the Foxes should go all out to sign John McGinn?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Leicester City are interested in Aston Villa star, John McGinn. (h/t Leicester Mercury)

The Scotsman, 24, caught the eye in his debut Championship season as Aston Villa earned promotion to the Premier League last term. He scored nine goals and assisted 12 times in 48 games across all competitions.

McGinn’s impressive displays seem to have caught Leicester City’s attention, as Brendan Rodgers looks to shape his squad in his own image over the summer.\

In fact, it was Rodgers who was keen to sign McGinn from Hibernian last summer while in charge of Celtic. However, the 24-year-old midfielder rejected the opportunity to sign for Celtic and joined Villa instead.

Brendan Rodgers has brought a sense of positivity around at the King Power Stadium since replacing Claude Puel in midst of the last campaign. The Northern Irish manager quickly given an identity to the team, changed their playing style, and increased the work rate of the players.

Having guided the Foxes to a ninth-placed finish, he will be looking to enhance his options as the Midlands aim to break into the top six this term.

Leicester have some exciting midfielders in their ranks in Wilfred Ndidi, Nampalys Mendy, Hamza Choudhury and James Maddison, but they lack in that department.

Youri Tielemans has returned to AS Monaco after his loan spell expired and while the Foxes are trying to sign him permanently, they face intense competition from Manchester United, Tottenham and AC Milan for the Belgian’s signature, as per the Telegraph.

Tielemans brought a lot of creativity and energy from the middle of the park in the latter half of the last season and his absence will be dearly felt next season.

Suffice to say, John McGinn could be a great alternative for the Foxes if Rodgers and co. fail to sign Tielemans permanently this summer.

Able to operate anywhere in midfield, McGinn excels in his passing, distribution skills, work-rate and tackling. The diminutive Scot has a good turn of pace and has the ability to run with the ball at his feet without losing possession.

He works tirelessly throughout the game and his energetic presence in the midfield allows the team’s creative players more freedom and space to construct goalscoring opportunities.

The ex-Hibernian ace’s industry, efficient passing and eye for goal would make him an appealing addition to Leicester’s team. McGinn has the qualities to potentially form an excellent partnership with the likes of Ndidi and Choudhury in the middle of the park.

Verdict

Aston Villa, however, intend to hand McGinn a new contract soon and are confident that he will sign the new deal to quickly put an end to the rumours.

Thus, it remains to be seen whether Rodgers becomes second time lucky or not in the Scotsman’s pursuit.
