According to Football Insider (h/t Leicestershire Live), Leicester City have been linked with a surprise move for Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.
A product of Celtic’s academy, the 27-year-old McGregor has been a key player for the club over the years and has won six consecutive league titles with them.
He has played a massive 280 matches for Celtic across all competitions and has 49 goals and 57 assists to his credit, proving that he is nothing short of talent and experience.
However, what makes McGregor even more special is his flexibility to function anywhere in the midfield. A central midfielder by trade, McGregor has also featured 51 times as an attacking midfielder for the Hoops so far.
Moreover, it is not the first time Leicester have been credited with an interest in the Scotsman. McGregor was a subject of transfer interest for the Foxes last summer and the club have now decided to plan a £20million move for the Celtic man.
Meanwhile, Leicester currently have four players who feature as central midfielder. However, only Youri Tielemans has been consistent enough with the rest yet to impress boss Brendan Rodgers. Apart from Tielemans, the Foxes have Dennis Praet, Adrien Silva and Matty James to play in the middle.
Praet just arrived last summer but has not been in the best of forms often been deployed as a substitute by Rodgers. He made just 12 Premier League starts last season, suggesting that there is clear room for improvement.
Silva and James, on the other hand, are not favourites, with the former having spent last season on loan with Monaco, while the latter spent most of his time across the sidelines. Also, Silva is 31 already and Cash is soon to hit his thirties, meaning an experienced and consistent midfielder such as McGregor could be a valuable addition for a side like Leicester.
Moreover, his versatility in the midfield could prove to be an added benefit for the Foxes if they wish to stay at the top after having finished fifth last season. Hence, Leicester must sign McGregor.
At the moment, Leicester just have one established central midfielder in Tielemans, and McGregor’s arrival will bolster Rodgers’ squad. An experienced customer, McGregor is not someone new to Rodgers, having already played under the Irishman at Celtic a few years back. Also, he is 27 now and still has plenty of football left in him.
