Leicester would find Maguire’s ideal replacement by signing this 26-year-old Manchester-born defender

Leicester City Opinion: Why the Foxes should sign James Tarkowski?

According to a report from the Sun, Leicester City have identified Burnley star James Tarkowski as the man to replace Harry Maguire if he moves on at the end of the season.

Harry Maguire, 26, was a star performer in England’s World Cup campaign last summer that saw him been linked heavily with a move away to Manchester United. However, Leicester were successful in keeping hold of the defender, who then in September 2018 signed a new five-year contract with the club.

The England international has suffered a couple of niggling injuries this season but continues to impress of late, and Manchester City are now believed to be interested in signing him, adds the report.

The Foxes are reluctant to lose their star defender and a fee of £90m might be needed to persuade them to sell the defender they landed from Hull City a couple of seasons ago.

Manchester City have the financial clout to pay that amount to lure Maguire away from the King Power Stadium and if that happens, Leicester would be wise to make a move for James Tarkowski.

James Tarkowski, 26, has been a consistent performer for Burnley since joining from Brentford in 2016.

The 26-year-old played a key role in helping the Clarets reach the Europa League qualifiers last season and while the Lancashire outfit hasn’t performed at their best this season, Tarkowski has been impressive at the back, yet again.

The Englishman is an old school defender, whose primary traits are physicality and no-nonsense defending. But he is also comfortable in playing out from the back and has earned two England caps under manager Gareth Southgate.

At 26, Tarkowski is entering the prime years of his career and his physical attributes, coupled with his composure on the ball makes him ideal for Brendan Rodgers’ style of play at Leicester.

He represents a near ideal replacement for Maguire and would be a solid addition to the Foxes backline. The Manchester-born defender is also an England international, which speak volumes over his development in the last few years.

Verdict

If Maguire leaves Leicester in the summer, Rodgers should not hesitate to spend on Tarkowski. Filip Benkovic is set to return to the club after impressing on loan at Celtic and the acquisition of Tarkowski could potentially see Leicester have a strong defensive base next season.

Plus, there are experienced heads in Jonny Evans and Wes Morgan to help the team whenever required. This certainly be something that should excite the King Power Stadium faithful.
