Leon Spinks was an American professional boxer who competed from 1977 to 1995. Besides being a heavyweight champion, Spinks had a unique gap-toothed grin (due to losing two and later all four of his front teeth) which made him more recognizable.

Spinks began his boxing career as an amateur boxer. As an amateur, Spinks won numerous medals in the light heavyweight division.
The first was medal was a bronze at the inaugural 1974 World Championships. His second medal was a silver at the 1975 Pan American Games, and lastly, he won a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics, which was held in Montreal.
Interestingly, Spinks served in the United States Marine Corps from 1973 to 1976. He successfully rose to the rank of corporal. He was stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and was also on the Marine Corps Boxing Team.
Spinks debuted professionally on January 15, 1977, in Las Vegas, Nevada. His first fight was against Bob Smith and he defeated Smith by knockout in five rounds.
Spinks made history on February 15, 1978. He defeated the legendary Muhammad Ali on a 15-round split decision in Las Vegas, Nevada. By defeating Ali, Spinks won the world heavyweight title in his eighth professional fight, the shortest span in history.
Nevertheless, the rematch with Ali went disastrous for Spinx. He was defeated miserably by a more dominating Ali. Ali won back his title by a unanimous fifteen-round decision.
Spinks began boxing in the cruiserweight division in the early 1980’s. He boxed for several years in the cruiserweight division and achieved mixed results.
In 1995, at the age of 42, Spinks retired after losing an 8-round decision to Fred Houpe.
In 2017, Spinks was inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.
