Liverpool Opinion: Reds should look at Leif Davis as a long-term investment
According to The Sun, Liverpool are scouting Leeds United wonderkid Leif Davis, with a view to a potential transfer in the summer window.
The Sun also understands that Liverpool are going to face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Bournemouth, who have an excellent track record of singing exciting homegrown talents evidenced by the fact that they recently snapped up Lloyd Kelly from Bristol City for £13 million.
Marcelo Bielsa rates 19-year-old Leif Davis very highly, with the Sun claiming that the Argentinian wants to keep the left-back at Elland Road to further his development, but the Whites have a battle on their hands to keep hold of their talented starlet after missing out on promotion to the Premier League.
Leif Davis joined Leeds United from League Two outfit Morecambe last summer as a part of the club’s development squad but he ended up making 5 appearances for the first-team due to an injury crisis at left-back.
The 19-year-old made his senior debut in the 3-2 victory over Aston Villa back in December and subsequently went on to feature in the Championship triumphs over Derby County, Rotherham and Swansea, as well as in the FA Cup defeat at the hands of QPR.
Davis would probably have played a lot more for Leeds but his breakthrough season came to a premature end due to a knee injury in February. The 19-year-old, however, has shown that he is a really talented player with a mountain of potential and Liverpool have seemingly seen enough in the youngster to consider a move for him this summer.
The Newcastle-born youngster, who is rated at £4million by Leeds, is primarily a left-back by trade, although he is equally adept at filling in as a centre-back at the heart of the defence. Davis has only just begun his development but Liverpool are willing to play a gamble and take him to the Premier League.
To put things into perspective, Liverpool should look at Leif Davis as a good long-term investment and a player for the future.
The 19-year-old has earned rave reviews from Bielsa and given that he made the jump from the development squad to fill in admirably in the Championship, the Red have every reason to believe there is something very special in the starlet.
Liverpool have plenty of firepower in their attacking options, and while a replacement for the out-of-contract Daniel Sturridge might still be on Jurgen Klopp’s recruitment list, the manager also needs to bring in a back up for Andrew Robertson at left-back.
Reserve left-back Alberto Moreno is set to depart Anfield on a free transfer this summer and his departure would render Klopp short of adequate cover on the left-hand side of the backline.
The Reds, of course, have the versatile James Milner to call upon to fill in at left-back, but the former England international is already 33 and it won’t be a bad idea for Liverpool to invest in a promising left-back and groom him for the future.
Klopp handed debuts to the likes of Ki-Jana Hoever and Rafael Camacho in the FA Cup earlier in the year and Leif Davis might get a look in as well if he manages to impress the manager.

That said, Liverpool should not hesitate to sign the promising 19-year-old left-back from Leeds United this summer in a bid to add much-needed cover in a key area of the pitch.
