Liverpool Opinion: Why the Reds should revive their interest in Ciro Immobile

Back in January, Italian news outlet Il Messaggero claimed Liverpool were interested in Lazio hitman Ciro Immobile. However, a deal didn’t materialise and the striker stayed put at Lazio.

The Italy international, 29, has been one of the most potent strikers in Serie A in recent years. Since moving to Lazio in 2016, Ciro Immobile has scored goals for fun in the Serie A. He has enjoyed another solid season with Lazio, bagging 18 goals across all competitions in 2018/19.

Now operating at the peak of his career, Ciro Immobile, certainly deserves one last big transfer. Considering his goalscoring exploits in Italy in the last few years, Liverpool must reignite their interest in the 29-year-old and sign him this summer.

The Reds concluded their top-flight campaign with a 2-0 victory over Wolves to end the season on 97 points but, agonisingly, one point behind champions Manchester City despite just one defeat all season.

But they still have the opportunity to end the season with some long-craved silverware, as Jurgen Klopp’s men take on Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid.

Once again the onus of scoring goals have fallen on Liverpool’s famed trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

They were excellent this campaign and their consistent form are one of the reasons why the Reds came so closer to winning the Premier League. Even with the trio having fired, Klopp is short of competent replacement attackers should one of them get injured next season.

Divock Origi proved his worth in gold by chipping in with crucial goals this past season but he cannot be relied upon to lead the attack in Firmino’s absence. Daniel Sturridge is very likely to leave Anfield this summer, while Xherdan Shaqiri hasn’t quite made much of a difference.

That’s when the signing of Immobile would make sense for Liverpool. He is a proper no.9 who can lead the line, run into the channels and finish off chances inside the box. The 29-year-old is superb at linking up with his teammates, which would see the likes of Mane, Salah and Firmino thrive playing alongside the Italian striker.

The Italy international loves to make penetrating runs in behind the opposition backline and can also release his teammates through on goal with incisive passes. Plus, Immobile is strong in the air and his off the ball work-rate would make him a perfect fit for Klopp’s style of play at Anfield.

Verdict

Liverpool do require a clinical no.9, who can either play with the other three forwards or make an impact from the bench. That being said, Klopp’s chances of challenging for the Premier League title again might get enhanced by bringing Immobile to Anfield.
