Why Liverpool should hijack Matthijs De Ligt’s move to Barcelona
According to Daily Mail, Spanish giants Barcelona are set to move for young Dutch and Ajax centre-back Matthijs De Ligt. The report adds that the 19-year-old could be the club’s priority target either in the winter transfer window or over the summer.
The Dutchman is quite similar to Gerard Pique in terms of his style of play and is one of the most sought-after players in European football.
However, here’s why Liverpool should hijack the youngster’s move:
De Ligt and Virgil van Dijk could form a great partnership
De Ligt was immense for the Netherlands against Germany alongside the Reds’ powerhouse defender and Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk. He was comfortable with the 27-year-old against the 2014 World champions and stood strong for his country.
The 19-year-old is comfortable on the ball and can make recovery runs when playing in a high-line defence.
Jurgen Klopp usually prefers his centre-backs to be bold on the ball and play in a high line. The £52m-rated De Ligt is good and adaptive in his position at the back and has shown quality when playing for Ajax. He was fantastic against Bayern Munich in a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League.
His partnership with van Dijk would be a good prospect for Liverpool for the future. The fact that they both are from the same country and play in a similar way, it would be great for the club to sign the youngster and allow them to form a great partnership for the next few seasons.
Verdict
De Ligt’s quality is such that European giants Barcelona are interested in him and targeting him. Hence, we can infer that he is right up there with one of the best centre-backs right now. In van Dijk, Liverpool already have one of the better defenders in the league. If they partner him with country-mate De Ligt, they can guarantee a great defensive partnership at the back.
