According to German outlet Express (h/t Daily Express), Liverpool are eying a double swoop for Borussia Monchengladbach duo Denis Zakaria and Marcus Thuram.
The two youngsters have been earning rave reviews in Germany for their impressive displays that have seen Monchengladbach climb to fourth place in the Bundesliga. Integral members of the current Monchengladbach line-up, the duo had even helped the side reach the top of the table earlier in the season.
Swiss international Zakaria has established himself as one of the best defenders in Germany this season, making 23 league appearances from a possible 25 games. He has also contributed to his side with two goals and two assists.
His defensive capabilities have been clearly on display, with the side conceding just 30 goals this season. Only leaders Bayern Munich and third-placed RB Leipzig (26 each) have conceded fewer. Marcus Thuram, meanwhile, has been a dominating presence in the attack for the German outfit. He has played in all their league games so far and has found the back of the net six times.
What makes him extra special is his ability to adapt to any role in the attack despite being a centre-forward. He has not just scored goals but has also provided assists to his teammates, making him one of the first names on the teamsheet.
Thuram, who mostly plays on the left flank for Monchengladbach, is his side’s top assist provider with eight to his name. Both Zakaria and Denis have been instrumental to their side’s success this season that they have attracted the interest of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
However, this pursuit just seems surplus to their requirements at the moment. The side already have as many as six attackers in their ranks.
The trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane have established themselves as one of the best-attacking units in the world, that the rest in the squad have been restricted to the sidelines mostly. However, Liverpool still have sufficient talent in their ranks, with the likes of Divock Origi, Xerdan Shaqiri, and winter signing Takumi Minamino waiting to prove a point.
Meanwhile, in defensive midfield, Liverpool already have a world-class talent in Fabinho. The Brazilian was crucial to the Reds’ Champions League success last year and is undoubtedly one of the best in that role at the moment.
The Merseyside club also have five more midfielders, with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita also capable of doing a decent job in the deep-lying role. Considering all this, a move for the Monchengladbach duo seems like a clear waste of time and money.
With Klopp’s Liverpool already having an abundance of talent and depth in their squad, a move for Zakaria and Thuram seems totally pointless. Hence, roping in the Monchengladbach pair seems surplus to the club’s requirements at the moment.
