Why Liverpool should sign Ruben Neves in the future
According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have been previously linked with Ruben Neves. Their interest goes as far back as his Porto days when he was their captain, leading them in Champions League games.
Liverpool’s assistant manager Pep Lijnders has strong connections with Wolves who have a history of recruiting Portuguese players. It was his recommendation that Liverpool should sign Diogo Jota and it has turned out fantastically for the Reds. A similar situation could arise in the future with Neves too.
Profile
Neves has been a regular starter in the Wolves side since moving from Portuguese outfit Porto following a £15million move back in 2017. Since then, the 23-year-old has played a total of 147 matches for them across all competitions and has scored 15 goals and provided 8 assists, proving his significance in the current squad.
He was also key to Wolves’ Premier League promotion in his maiden season with them, playing 42 Championship matches and scoring 6 goals. A defensive midfielder by trade, Neves has managed 8 clean sheets this season in the league for Wolves. He has evolved into a regular in the Portugal national team as well.
The Wolves midfielder has made 18 appearances for Portugal so far and was a part of their UEFA Nations League winning squad.
Neves can be the future of Liverpool’s midfield
Despite being well-stacked in the middle with as many as eight midfielders, Liverpool faces an uncertain future regarding the future of Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is yet to sign a new deal at Anfield with less than one year left on his contract.
Having played more than 200 times for Liverpool across all competitions, Wijnaldum has been crucial to the Reds’ success in recent times. He is one of Klopp’s regulars. There is also a growing concern regarding the form of midfielder Naby Keita.
The signing from RB Leipzig has failed to impress Klopp, forcing him to look for better options like Neves. There are also concerns of Milner ageing and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s constant injuries.

Having proved himself already with Porto and Wolves, Neves ticks all the right boxes. He could be a valuable addition to Klopp’s Reds next season if they wish to stay at the top.
With main man Wijnaldum yet to sign a new contract with Liverpool, the Merseyside club’s decision to rope in Neves makes complete sense. A proven customer in English soil, Neves, by all means, will make Liverpool stronger and signing him in the future would be a smart decision.
