Harris began playing tennis at the tender age of 3 and when he was 15 years old, Harris committed professionally to the sport. In other words, Harris turned pro in 2015.
Before turning pro, Harris played juniors tennis where in November 2012, Harris won his first ITF junior singles title at the G5 in Windhoek, Namibia. Further, in August 2014, Harris represented South Africa at the Youth Olympic Games.
As a junior, Harris reached the ranking of No. 38 and he maintained a singles win–loss record of 73–44.
After turning pro in 2015, Harris ended the year with a single ranking of 358. However, during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, Harris mainly played in the ITF Futures tour. In June 2015, Harris won his first ITF Futures singles title in Mozambique F2. Harris also won his first ITF Futures Doubles title in June 2015.
Also, in 2015, Harris reached five ITF Futures tour single finals, winning four. In 2016, Harris reached eight ITF Futures tour finals, winning six. In 2017, Harris didn’t see much success. Nevertheless, he reached Challenger tour semifinals in Kyoto, Japan and Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei and qualified for his first ATP World Tour event in Antalya, Turkey.
In 2018, Harris reached four ITF Futures tour finals, winning three. Harris also won his first ATP Challenger title at the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships.
In August 2018, Harris also made his Grand Slam debut at the 2018 US Open through the qualifying rounds. Further, in October 2018, Harris won his second ATP Challenger title of the year at the Stockton Challenger.
In 2019, Harris qualified for his second main draw at a Grand Slam at the 2019 Australian Open. In February 2019, he won the Launceston Tennis International, and due to his win, Harris reached World No. 100 in the ATP rankings.
Harris also entered the main draw of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships for the first time and the 2019 US Open for the second time.
In 2020, Harris reached his first ATP final at the 2020 Adelaide International but lost to Andrey Rublev. In February 2021, Harris reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open.
In March 2021, Harris reached his first ATP 500 final at the 2021 Dubai Tennis Championships. However, he lost the final to Aslan Karatsev in straight sets. Nevertheless, because of this successful run, he reached a then career-high singles ranking of world No. 52.
Furthermore, in August 2021, Harris entered the top 50 at world No. 49 after beating Rafael Nadal at the 2021 Citi Open.
Next, in the 2021 US Open, Harris reached the quarterfinals of a Major for the first time. However, he lost the quarterfinals to Alexander Zverev in straight sets. But, due to the results of the US Open, Harris moved within the world’s top 40 ranking at World No. 31 on 13 September 2021, his singles career-high. In 2023, he was eliminated from the round 3 in both Wimbledon and Australian Open.
He is currently ranked no. 147 in 2024.
