Top seed Caroline Garcia will lock horns with Colombian youngster Camila Osorio in the semifinals of the 2023 Lyon Open on Saturday.
The 29-year-old has not hit the ground running in 2023 so far. Yes, she is two wins away from bagging her 12th WTA title but she hasn’t played to her full potential, something that we were so used to seeing in the latter half of 2022. However, there are signs that Garcia is getting to where she belongs.
In the first round, the 2022 WTA Finals winner got the better of Tereza Martincova in two tight sets. Garcia’s serves were too hot to handle for Martincova as the former had a win percentage of 71 on the first serve. In the round of 16, Garcia came back from a set down to beat Alison Van Uytvanck 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. The world No. 5 turned the game on its head from the second set onwards and it was a spectacle for tennis fans. In the quarterfinals, Garcia had to fight hard during her win in straight sets against Jasmine Paolini. The match ended 7-5, 7-5 as Garcia fired in 9 aces.
The 21-year-old has managed to reach her first semifinal in almost a year. Her last semifinal appearance came in the 2022 Copa Colsanitas.
In the round of 32, Camila Osorio managed to beat the experienced Alize Cornet in three sets. The Colombian star won the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. In the second round, Osorio went past Jule Niemeier in two grueling sets 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. The quarterfinals saw Osorio beat the impressive Czech qualifier Linda Noskova 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
This will be the first meeting between Camila Osorio and Caroline Garcia. Therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Caroline Garcia to win in straight sets.
