Serbian’s Dusan Lajovic will take on Australian Jason Kubler in the opening round of the Madrid Open
Jason Kubler is known more as a doubles specialist, but the Australian has been pretty impressive in singles so far this season.
Kubler stole the limelight earlier this year at the Australian Open when he won the Grand Slam doubles title partnering Rinky Hijikata. When it comes to singles, Kubler’s best performance so far this season came at the ATP Houston Open, where he reached the quarter-finals but eventually lost to No.1 seed Frances Tiafoe.
Kubler is coming into this tournament after playing in similar sort of conditions at the Barcelona Open last week. Kubler has one win so far on the Spanish tour and that came against Daniel Rincon in the opening round in Barcelona. Kubler is scheduled to play both singles and doubles tomorrow – it will be interesting to see how he manages the workload.
Dusan Lajovic is in scintillating form off late and is coming into this event after an all-time high of winning the Srpska Open last week. The Serbian’s journey at the Srpska Open is one for the ages and it is certainly one of the greatest moments in the 32-year-old’s professional career.
Lajovic defeated four seeded players during his incredible title-winning campaign – Gregoire Barrere (8), Novak Djokovic (1), Miomir Kecmanovic (4) and Andrey Rublev (2). It is important to note that he beat Djokovic convincingly in straight sets and his win in the final against Rublev proved it for once and for all that his title win was no fluke. Lajovic will look to carry forward this confidence to Madrid and showcase his impressive, fearless brand of Tennis.

Head to head and Predictions
Kubler and Lajovic have never played each other before on the ATP tour. This is the first professional head to head clash between the two players. Lajovic is the slight favourite going into this match both in terms of form and experience. It will be a tough task for Kubler in this encounter but he is expected to pose a tough challenge. However, we expect the Serbian veteran to see off Kubler’s challenge and win in three sets.
