Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko will take on Russian Daria Kasatkina in the third round of the Madrid Open
Lesia Tsurenko has been in good touch and registered two impressive victories in her previous two rounds. She began her campaign with a comprehensive win over Lucia Bronzetti and then defeated 25th seed Jil Teichmann 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in an intense encounter.
The 33-year-old will look to carry forward this positive momentum to her high-voltage match against Kasatkina. It remains to be seen if Tsurenko can pull off a major upset against the 8th seed.
Daria Kasatkina’s form coming into the match at Madrid Open 2023
Kasatkina received a ‘Bye’ in the Round of 128 due to her superior seeding and began her campaign yesterday in the Round of 64. She comfortably defeated compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in that encounter in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Kasatkina has been seeded No.8 in the tournament and she is one of the early favourites to go deep into the tournament.
The Russian is coming into this tournament following a shock first-round exit from the Stuttgart Open earlier this month. However, she did well before that in the WTA Charleston Open, reaching the semi-finals before losing to No.2 seed Ons Jabeur. Kasatkina will look to draw confidence from that performance and put on an impressive display in Madrid.

Head to head and Predictions
Tsurenko and Kasatkina have played each other four rimes before on the WTA tour. They know each other’s game very well and all the encounters were closely fought with the head to head tally currently standing at 2-2. On paper, Kasatkina is the clear favourite going into this match both in terms of form and rankings but we can certainly expect the Ukrainian to pose a tough challenge. It promises to be an intense clash and we are predicting a win for Kasatkina in three sets over Tsurenko.
