Australia’s Alex de Minaur will take on Aslan Karatsev in the Round of 32 at the Madrid Open
Alex de Minaur has had a stellar 2023 so far and is high on confidence. The major highlight of his season has been the title-winning campaign at the Acapulco Open, where he defeated top seeds like Holger Rune and Tommy Paul in the process of being crowned the champion. The Australian has been very consistent this year and had a commendable quarter-finals finish at the recently concluded Barcelona Open.
de Minaur is the No.16 seed in the tournament and received a ‘Bye’ in the Round of 128. The 24-year-old has been in sublime touch and has carried forward his positive momentum into this competition. He registered a comprehensive 6-4, 7-6 victory against Marco Cecchinato in his opening encounter and will be aiming to go deep into the tournament.
Aslan Karatsev is yet to drop a set at the Madrid Open and has been in fine touch. He overcame two rounds of qualifiers to progress to the main draw and he has continued his good form against more fancied opponents.
The Russian star defeated Laslo Dere in his opening encounter on the main stage and followed it up with another commendable 6-2, 7-5 victory against No.23 seed Botic van de Zandschulp. Karatsev will look to continue his dream run and get the better of de Minaur in his upcoming match.

de Minaur and Karatsev have played each other once before on the ATP tour and that sole encounter was played way back in 2020. The Australian emerged victorious on that occasion, with convincing straight sets win and leads the overall head-to-head 1-0. However, Karatsev is in good form and this match is a really difficult one to call. Both players are very close in terms of gameplay and rankings. We are expecting an intense battle with de Minaur eventually edging out Karatsev in three sets.
