Dusan Lajovic is in scintillating form of late and is coming into this event after an all-time high of winning the Srpska Open last week.
The Serbian’s journey at the Srpska Open is one for the ages and it is certainly one of the greatest moments in the 32-year-old’s professional career. Lajovic defeated four seeded players during his incredible title-winning campaign – Gregoire Barrere (8), Novak Djokovic (1), Miomir Kecmanovic (4) and Andrey Rublev (2).
It is important to note that he beat Djokovic convincingly in straight sets and his win in the final against Rublev proved for once and for all that his title win was no fluke.
He has continued his good form even in Madrid and has looked in sublime touch. The Serbian began his campaign with a comprehensive win against Jason Kubler in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. He followed it up with a major upset against the seventh seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, emerging as the deserved winner in a hard-fought clash which ended 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.
Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff is on a fairy-tale run at the Madrid Open. The 33-year-old overcame two rounds of qualifying to make it to the main draw and he doesn’t look in the mood to stop.
Struff beat Lorenzo Sonego in his first match of the main draw and followed it up with a commendable victory against No.32 seed Ben Shelton. Struff has been in really good touch and it remains to be seen if he can carry forward the positive momentum and get the better of Lajovic.
