Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov will face the challenge of Frenchman Gregoire Barrere in the opening round of the Madrid Open
Grigor Dimitrov is coming into this match after an injury scare in his last tournament – the Barcelona Open. The good news is that he is all fit and raring to go at the Madrid Open having got enough time for rest and recovery after handing a walkover to Alex de Minaur in Barcelona last week. Dimitrov is seeded No.26 in the tournament and will aim to live up to expectations by putting up a good display in Madrid.
Dimitrov hasn’t been in the best of form in his previous few tournaments but the Bulgarian is experienced enough to know how to turn things around.
He started 2023 on a good note but there has been a lack in consistency as the season has progressed. His best performance so far this year came at the ATP Rotterdam, where he reached the semi-finals before eventually losing to Daniil Medvedev. Dimitrov would look to replicate his early-season form and start afresh in Madrid.
Gregoire Barrere is coming into this match after registering a hard-fought 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 win over Emilio Nava in the first round. The Frenchman hasn’t been consistent enough on the ATP tour so far and has suffered early exits from most of the tournaments he has played this year. Barrere is currently ranked World No.57 in men’s singles and he will certainly face an uphill battle against Dimitrov in this encounter.

Head to head and Predictions
Barrere and Dimitrov have played each other twice before on the ATP tour. Both the encounters were played in 2020 and the overall head to head currently stands at 1-1. The Bulgarian is the clear favourite going into this match both in terms of form and rankings. It will be an uphill task for Barrere in this encounter but he is expected to pose a tough challenge. We are predicting a win in three sets for Grigor Dimitrov.
