Croatia’s Borna Coric will take on Hugo Gaston in the Round of 64 at the Madrid Open
Borna Coric has been in very poor form of late and suffered first-round exits in all of his previous four tournaments – Srpska Open, Monte-Carlo Masters, the Miami Open and the Indian Wells Masters. His best performance so far this year came at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where he reached the Quarter-finals but eventually lost to No.3 seed Daniil Medvedev. Coric is yet to win any silverware this season and he will certainly look to turn things around in Madrid.
The 26-year-old is seeded No.17 and is expected to go deep into the tournament. Coric received a bye in the first round thanks to his superior seeding and is now set to take the court directly for his Round of 64 encounter against France’s Hugo Gaston. It remains to be seen if Coric can be at his best against his unseeded but promising opponent.
Frenchman Hugo Gaston defeated compatriot Jeremy Chardy in the first round to set up a clash against Coric. Gaston is a regular in the Challenger Series and does not always feature in the main rounds of the prestigious events on the ATP tour.
The 22-year-old is currently ranked World No. 106 in ATP singles and the Madrid Masters is the perfect platform for the youngster to make a name for himself. However, he will certainly face an uphill task against a seasoned campaigner like Coric.

Head-to-head and Predictions
Gaston and Coric have never played each other before on the ATP tour. This is the first professional head to head clash between the two players. Coric is the outright favourite going into this match both in terms of form and experience. It will be a tough ask for Gaston in this encounter, but he is expected to pose a tough challenge. However, we expect the seeded Croatian to see off Gaston’s challenge and win in three sets.
