Top seed Iga Swiatek will face the challenge of Petra Martic in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open
Iga Swiatek was invincible in 2022 and she has kind of replicated her form even this year. However, she has choked in the final stages of some of the tournaments in 2023 and she would definitely like to rectify that. Swiatek has won two WTA titles already this year – the Qatar Open and the Stuttgart Open besides reaching the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters and finishing as runners-up at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
The World No.1 women’s star is coming into this match at the back of a hard-fought win against Ekaterina Alexandrova. She previously registered two comprehensive straight sets wins in her first two encounters. The Polish ache began her campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Julia Grabher and followed it up with a commendable win over No.28 seed Bernarda Pera before getting the better of Alexandrova. Swiatek is clearly the favourite to go all the way and clinch the title – it would be a huge upset if she fails to do so.
Martic hasn’t been in the best of form so far this season, but she has been pretty impressive at the Madrid Open. The Croatian veteran started her campaign with a solid 7-6, 6-3 win over Laura Siegemund and followed it up with a commendable victory against Anna Kalinskaya in the next round. She defeated 11th seed Barbora Krejcikova in the Round of 16 to set up a Quarter-final clash against top seed Iga Swiatek. It remains to be seen if Martic can hold onto her nerves and script a famous victory against Swiatek.

Match details – Quarter-final
Swiatek and Martic have played each other only once before on the WTA tour. The World No.1 emerged victorious on that occasion at the 2021 Indian Wells Masters and leads the overall head-to-head 1-0. However, Patric is in good form, and she won’t be a pushover for sure. It is definitely a tough ask for the Croatian though and Swiatek enters this tie as the outright favourite both in terms of form and rankings. We are predicting a win in straight sets for Iga Swiatek.
