Spanish veteran Jaume Munar will take on Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in the Round of 16 at the Madrid Open
Munar began his campaign at the Madrid Open with a 7-6, 7-6 win against Thanasi Kokkinakis. In the second round, he received a walkover from 30th seed Tallon Griekspoor mid-way through the match after he won the first set 7-6. The Spaniard then emerged victorious in an intense clash against Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Munar will fancy his chances against Altmaier but he can certainly not be complacent against this tricky opponent.
Munar has had an average season so far and consistency has been a big problem for the Spaniard. His best performance so far in 2023 came at the Chile Open in March, where he reached the Semi-finals but eventually lost to local favourite Nicolas Jarry. It remains to be seen if Munar can make use of his good start in Madrid and go deep into the tournament.
Altmaier is having a dream run at the Madrid Open. After overcoming two rounds of qualifiers, the German ace defeated compatriot Oscar Otte in the first round of the main draw. Interestingly, he faced another fellow German Yannick Hanfmann in the second round and once again registered a comprehensive 7-6, 6-3 win. Altmaier has nothing to lose at this stage – he would look to play freely and continue his dream run in the tournament.

Munar and Altmaier have played each other only once before on the ATP tour. The Spanish veteran emerged victorious on that occasion at the Roland Garros and leads the overall head to head 1-0. However, Altmaier is in good form and this match is a really difficult one to call. Both players are very close in terms of gameplay and rankings. We are expecting an intense battle with Munar eventually edging out Altmaier in three sets.
