Madrid Open 2023: Pegula/Gauff vs Ruse/Kostyuk – Preview, Predictions, Head-to-head and Stats

Published by

Top seeds Pegula and Gauff will face the challenge of Ruse and Kostyuk in the Semi-finals of the Madrid Open

Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff form a strong doubles pair and they have already won two WTA doubles titles this year – the Qatar Open and the Miami Open. Pegula and Gauff complement each other’s playing style very well and it shows in their recent results. The American duo are high on confidence and have carried forward their fine form into the Madrid Open.

Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff

They began their campaign at the Madrid Open with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Routliffe/Guarachi and followed it up with another straight-sets victory against Panova/Olmos. The top seeds played out an intense match against No.6 seeds Stefani/Dabrowski in the quarter-finals and eventually triumphed 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Pegula/Gauff are the favourites to go all the way and clinch the title but there is certainly no room for complacency in their upcoming encounter.

Ruse/Kostyuk’s form coming into the match at Madrid Open

Ruse and Kostyuk are more regular on the ITF circuit, and they do not have enough experience of playing at the highest level.

They began their Madrid Open campaign with a victory against Danilina/Babos and were lucky enough to receive a walkover from seasoned campaigners Pavlyuchenkova/Rybakina in the second round. In the quarter-finals, the Romanian-Ukrainian pair got the better of Niculescu/Ninomiya to set up a semi-final clash against top seeds Pegula/Gauff.

Head to Head and Predictions

Pegula/Gauff and Ruse/Kostyuk have never played each other before on the WTA tour. This is the first professional match between the two pairs. Pegula and Gauff are the outright favourites going into this encounter both in terms of experience and rankings. It will be an uphill task for Ruse/Kostyuk but it’s a great opportunity for them to prove their mettle. We are predicting a win in straight sets for Pegula/Gauff.
