Veronika Kudermetova will face the challenge of compatriot Anastasia Potapova in the Round of 32 at the Madrid Open
Veronika Kudermetova is coming into this match at the back of three consecutive first-round exits in her previous tournaments. Despite being a seeded player in all the events, the Russian hasn’t quite been able to live up to expectations.
Her best performance so far this year came at the Qatar Open earlier this year in February. She had an incredible run to the final but eventually lost to top seed Iga Swiatek and ended up finishing as runners-up.
She has made a good start to the tournament though, registering a commendable 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in her first encounter. Kudermetova is seeded No.12 in Madrid and she will be aiming to go deep into the tournament. It remains to be seen if the Russian can turn things around and live up to the high expectations.
Anastasia Potapova’s form coming into the match at Madrid Open
Potapova is coming into this match following a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win against Jaqueline Cristian in her first encounter. She is seeded No.21 in the tournament and is high on confidence after a commendable run to the semi-finals at the Stuttgart Open last week.
Potapova has been pretty consistent on the WTA this season and even won the Linz Open in February. It will be interesting to see if she can pull off an upset against the higher-ranked Kudermetova.

Head to head and Predictions
Kudermetova and Potapova have played each other twice before on the WTA tour and also happen to be partners in doubles. They know each other’s game very well and both the previous encounters were closely fought with the head to head tally currently standing at 1-1. On paper, Kudermetova is the slight favourite going into this match both in terms of experience and rankings but we can certainly expect the in-form Potapova to pose a tough challenge. It promises to be an intense clash and we are predicting a win in three sets for Kudermetova.
