According to 90min (h/t Daily Express), Manchester City have joined a host of top clubs in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen talent Kai Havertz.
20-year-old attacking midfielder Havertz is considered as one of the brightest talents in Europe and has a £100million price tag on his head. Signing the midfielder would not be an easy task for Pep Guardiola’s side, with many top clubs hot on the trail for his signature.
The German has had another impressive season at Leverkusen, netting 10 goals and providing 8 assists in 34 games across all competitions. Havertz had already displayed his immense potential to the world with a breakthrough campaign last season.
He scored a whopping 17 goals and gave four assists from 34 matches for Leverkusen, raising a few eyebrows.
His standout performances in the Leverkusen attack saw the side finishing an impressive fourth last season. A clear talent, Havertz had announced his entry into the top-flight by becoming the club’s youngest ever debutant at 17 years and 126 days, back in 2016.
Having just turned 20 last year, Havertz has already played 139 matches for the Bundesliga outfit, giving a fair idea that he has the game to play at the highest level despite his young age.
Meanwhile, City are in dire need of an attacking midfielder, with veteran and legend David Silva set to depart this summer after a ten-year spell. The defending champions just have Kevin De Bruyne left in that role and Havertz’s arrival could help them in the attack.
Also, City signing Havertz could ease the burden on De Bruyne, who does the major share of their creative work up front. The Belgian has been sensational for Guardiola’s side with a massive 17 league assists to his name.
City could also make good use of Havert’z versatility as he is capable of playing anywhere in the attack. The German youngster has shown that on various occasions now and has in the past played across both flanks and also in a deeper role in the midfield.
That said, City should strengthen their midfield by pulling the strings on this talented youngster as he can once again make them a force to reckon with.
Skipper Silva’s departure leaves a big void to be filled with and Havertz is a perfect fit considering his displays in the past few seasons. He could be an excellent future replacement for the 2010 World Cup winner. Also, his flexibility in attack can give Guardiola plenty of options in the attack.
