Manchester City Opinion: Why Man City must sign Rodrigo from Valencia?

According to a report from CalcioNapoli24, Manchester City are one of the clubs interested in signing Valencia forward, Rodrigo Moreno. The other clubs keen on him are Napoli, AS Monaco and Bayern Munich.

Rodrigo, 28, enjoyed a solid campaign with Valencia as he scored 14 goals and registered eight assists in 51 appearances across all competitions. He was chiefly involved in helping the Los Ches finish fourth in the La Liga table and qualify for the Champions League.

The Spanish international’s good form in the La Liga haven’t gone under the radar and Manchester City must beat the aforementioned clubs to sign him this summer.

Manchester City claimed the Premier League title in 2018, becoming the first team to capture the prize with 100 points. Pep Guardiola and his players did even better this season by completing a domestic treble of the Premier League title, Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

But Champions League glory has still eluded City and while the English champions are already taking steps to prevent UEFA from banning them from next season’s UEFA Champions League, Guardiola should bring in reinforcements this summer.

City have one of the best attacking units that has destroyed teams in the Premier League and Europe. Sergio Aguero is arguably the best striker in the Premier League and he enjoyed another strong season with the Cityzens.

The diminutive Argentinean is a goal-machine and a potential match-winner who played a crucial role in City’s domestic treble this past season. However, he has had some injury problems in the last few campaigns and has entered the 30s.

Aguero’s deputy, Gabriel Jesus, managed just seven goals in 29 Premier League games in the 2018/19 campaign. Guardiola has shown previously he is not afraid to bench anyone and Jesus’ hot and cold form throughout the campaign apparently handed Aguero a free run in the team.

But if City are to become the champions of Europe, they need to bring in another striker that can compete with Aguero and Jesus.

Rodrigo could be an ideal fit at the Etihad. The Spaniard has been adding to his glowing reputation, scoring 14 goals for Valencia in all competitions last campaign.

He is a hardworking striker with the ability to score from outside the box and also create chances for his teammates. The 28-year-old is comfortable playing with the back to his goal and will offer a different dimension to City’s attack.

Verdict

Truly, the competition for places in the City attack will be fierce should they manage to land Rodrigo. And that’s exactly required for Guardiola and co. if they are to retain the title and also genuinely challenge for the Champions League trophy, provided UEFA allows them to participate next season.
