Man City Opinion: Citizens should sign Gianmarco Cangiano to improve their youth ranks

According to claims from Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Man City and Brighton are interested in signing Roma wonderkid Gianmarco Cangiano this summer.

The 17-year-old has risen to prominence with a string of impressive performances for Roma’s reserve side this term, accumulating 15 goals and 8 assists to put himself on the verge of a call up to the first team ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The Calciomercato reports that Cangiano idolises Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne and his style of play resembles that of the Italian international, cutting inside from the flanks to fire wicked curling shots on goal.

Cangiano has earned rave reviews for his performances at the youth and reserve level for Roma and he is considered as one of the brightest upcoming prospects of Italian football. The 17-year-old prodigy is yet to break his way into the senior side, although his professional bow might not be far away given his prolific record for the reserves this season.

Noted for his pace, flair and technical brilliance, Cangiano is essentially a right-footed winger who likes to operate down the left flank, which allows him to cut inside on to his stronger right foot and create goalscoring chances.

He has shown a level of maturity that belies his tender years, both in terms of decision-making and end-product, and it is not difficult to see why he is held in such high regard at the Italian capital.

To put things into perspective, Man City would bag a massive coup if the Citizens manage to win the race for the 5-cap Italian U-18 international this summer. Cangiano is yet to be tested at the senior level but his talent and potential should prompt City to look at him as one for the future.

Man City were crowned champions of the Premier League on Sunday following their 4-1 drubbing of Brighton on the south coast, as Pep Guardiola’s side completed their title defence at the expense of Liverpool, who agonisingly fell short by a margin of just one point.

The Citizens have every reason to be overjoyed with their resounding success in the Premier League this season and they have a chance of completing a domestic treble if they manage to get the better of Watford in the FA Cup final on Saturday, having already won the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea earlier in the year.

While long-term replacements for David Silva and Fernandinho in the midfield and reinforcements at both right-back and left-back should be high on Guardiola’s wishlist for the summer, Man City should also look to invest in a few talented teenagers in order to increase competition in their youth ranks.

They have lost highly-rated youngsters like Jadon Sancho, Brahim Diaz and Rabbi Matondo in recent times and bringing in a top-class young talent like Cangiano is bound to bolster the youth side.

Man City signed Croatian starlet Ante Palaversa from Hajduk Split back in January and the Citizens have made a reputation for themselves as a club that excels in getting the best out of young players.

The likes of Fernandinho, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Aymeric Laporte, Bernardo Silva, Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus were not world-beaters before they came to the Etihad and City deserve the credit for maximising their potential.

Also, the rise of academy graduate Phil Foden speaks volumes of all the effort and the money that the club has invested towards the development of youth.
