Andrey Rublev won a couple of his matches in straight sets and another two in five sets to reach the US Open quarterfinals. The Russian tennis pro faced an upbeat Frances Tiafoe and the American played brilliantly to win the match in straight sets 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-0), 6-4.
The match ended in 2 hours and 35 minutes as Tiafoe carried on with the momentum after defeating Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. Tiafoe has now reached his first Grand Slam semifinal.
Andrey Rublev failed to hold back his tears during the third set after Tiafoe got the decisive break to get his nose in front. The 24-year-old was seen covering his dejected face with a towel and later he bit a tennis ball as emotions were running high for the World No. 11. He lost his sixth quarterfinal match at Grand Slam tournaments as the last-eight jinx doesn’t seem to end for the talented youngster.
Frances Tiafoe will face the dominant Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals. The Spaniard is one of the favorites to go the distance. He has played some scintillating tennis thus far in the competition. Tiafoe versus Alcaraz promises to be a mouth-watering clash that you would not want to miss.
Tennis fans rallied behind Andrey Rublev after watching the youngster in tears during the match. One fan also called for him to be mentally stronger but also mentioned that it is always easier said than done.
